The Path of the Maker
The XBW Dojo is a unique and experimental effort to teach workshop skills with a martial-arts-style curriculum. Instead of particular weapons, we learn tools. Instead of katas or strikes, we use engineering or crafting techniques.
IDEAS - The curriculum is broken into materials, tools, and techniques each referred to as a "skill". Each one has a novice, journeyman, and expert level. - There is a tool track and a material trackk - What about disassemble/reassemble? It would be cool to have a track where you take things apart and put them back together. As you advance, you get into more complex objects and/or replacing broken bits and/or modifying the original in some way. Example: Tom Sachs changing the Milwaukee vacuum to use Makita battery. - Each skill has three levels that are represented by materials. plastic, wood, steel, all three. Once a skill is completed, you get a pin for that skill in the material you have completed. - Skill levels are materials: plastic, wood, steel - Skill levels are dimensions: point, line, polygon, polyhedron. The achievement badge is a cube of something, and as you achieve each level you modify the badge itself accordingly. - Skill levels are metals: copper, silver, gold - the achievement badges are colored at the level. - members get a tool apron, the badges are attached to the apron. - ooh, we should make our aprons.
How does this actually get broken down? Not sure!
