Bolt III: Be Present
Commentary
The original term was about punctuality. Punctuality is not the point. The point is to be present and able to work when you arrive at the workshop. Showing up is important, but showing up awake, sober, and energized is ideal. It's not when you arrive, it is being ready when you are. Be present.
Being present has both an internal and external (or endothermic and exothermic) valence. Internally, you should be all of the things listed above. Ready to work in all of the right ways. Nervous is fine, distracted and irritated is not. Distraction is how people lose fingers. Irritation encourages you to skip steps because you would rather be doing something else. This is dangerous.
Externally, you should be aware of the space and others within it. Nothing in your space is irrelevant while you are working. On one hand, you never know when inspiration will strike. On the other, the space is full of fragility, danger, and mortality. This is a community space, and respect for others is a requirement. Awareness is a prerequisite of respect, you need to be aware of others to respect the sovereignty of their work and the sanctity of their focus. The same is expected for you. Are you about to interrupt others with your work?
Are you carrying something hot or sharp through the workshop? One of the rules is to call it out: HOT BEHIND YOU or SHARP BEHIND YOU. This requires that you Be Present.
The "work hard, play hard" dogma is no longer part of this principal. It has been used too often to justify unnecessary grind in the pursuit of capital above all else. Playing hard is not necessary. This is a dumb idea and shouldn't have been included in the original concept.
